How a Condensing Water Heater Works

A condensing water heater—also referred to as a high-efficiency water heater—is quite similar to a conventional gas water heater but with one major difference. Both water heater types burn gas and have an exhaust flue, but the condensing style is more efficient due to how heat is transferred to the water. A conventional gas water heater burns fuel in an open chamber, and the hot combustion gas rises through a central flue. Much of this heat is transferred to the water, but a significant amount is lost through the vent pipe. A condensing model has a fan that pushes air into a sealed chamber. As fuel burns, the combustion gas is channeled to a secondary heat exchanger with a large surface in order to maximize the transfer of heat energy to the water. This process is so effective that the gas cools to the point that the water vapor condenses thereby releasing its latent heat and resulting in minimal loss.

The Benefits of a Condensing Water Heater

While a condensing water heater will cost a bit more to purchase and install than its conventional counterpart, it will cost less to own over the life of the unit, which is the greatest benefit. Condensing models are cheaper to run on a month-to-month basis and also better for the environment. Their higher efficiency is even more dramatic in a colder climate like ours. A condensing tank water heater is more efficient than a noncondensing tankless water heater, and homeowners in our region now have the option of condensing on-demand water heating systems as well.

Is It Time for a New Water Heater?

A common mistake homeowners make is trying to squeeze extra life out of an old water heater, but that approach will actually cost you more in the end. We recommend replacing your water heater proactively based on its expected lifespan as opposed to waiting for it to fail. It’s also a good idea to perform routine maintenance as tank water heaters need to be flushed and tankless water heaters need to be descaled and have their filters replaced more frequently than people relize. You should also watch for indications of a potential problem, such as any leak no matter how seemingly minor, discolored hot water, inconsistent temperatures, running out of hot water too soon, unusual odors, and strange or loud sounds.

The Types of Water Heaters We Install

Sanks install both tank and tankless condensing water heater systems. We also install standard gas tank and tankless water heaters in addition to electric units. Our team can perform a conversion between gas and electric, and we work with heat pump water heaters as well.

Tankless Water Heater

Tankless Water Heaters

On-demand systems are the hottest trend in residential water heating. The big advantage of this approach is that you can enjoy a practically limitless supply of hot water for your home.

Standard Tank Water Heater

Tank Water Heaters

Tank water heaters are the conventional solution, and tank sizes range from 20 to 120 gallons. A condensing water heater with a tank is among the most energy-efficient options on the market.

Heat Pump Water Heater

Heat Pump Water Heaters

Heat pump water heaters are an energy-efficient alternative that operates by transferring heat energy to the water. These systems are often integrated with the heat pump used to heat and cool a home.
