When summer hits and the temperatures start climbing, most of us are quick to turn on the AC without thinking twice. But have you ever questioned how air conditioners work? An AC system is much more than just a magic box that blows cold air. It’s a carefully engineered system that keeps your home comfortable. Our air conditioning professionals at Sanks Mechanical are here to break it down.
At its core, an air conditioner removes heat from inside your home and releases it outside. It does this using a closed-loop system of coils, refrigerant, fans, and a compressor. It’s a continuous process that keeps your indoor air cool and your living space feeling just right. Here’s how air conditioners work, step by step.
The AC system starts by drawing in warm indoor air through return ducts. This air passes over an evaporator coil filled with refrigerant, which is a special fluid that easily absorbs heat.
As the warm air moves over the cold evaporator coil, the refrigerant inside absorbs the heat. This causes the refrigerant to evaporate and turn into a gas, carrying the heat with it.
The now-warm refrigerant gas travels to the outdoor unit, where it enters the compressor. The compressor increases the pressure and pushes the gas through the condenser coil.
A fan in the outdoor unit blows air across the condenser coil, releasing the heat into the outside air. As the refrigerant cools down, it turns back into a liquid and is ready to start the cycle again.
Meanwhile, the cooled indoor air is pushed through your home’s ductwork and into each room. That’s the refreshing breeze you feel when the AC is on.
Your air conditioner doesn’t just cool the air, it also helps regulate humidity and filter out particles like dust and allergens. That’s why a well-maintained AC system is so important, especially during the hottest months of the year. If your AC isn’t running efficiently, your comfort and energy bills can suffer.
